Art 84 and Fisterra Projects announce a new exhibit by Austin artist Cornelius Carter entitled Work in Progress. The exhibit captures the struggle and glory of the African-American experience along with the artist’s faith in the American dream of equality and opportunity for all. We share that faith, and we support all the people who are working so hard today to make the dream a reality.

Taking inspiration from multiple traditions, Cornelius weaves together imagery from history, mythology, childhood, and life experience to create paintings that are thought-provoking, captivating, and beautiful. He often incorporates historical elements and classical styling, but from his own cultural perspective. People and their relationships are a central theme in his work.

“Mom always allowed painting, drawing on the walls, as long as I can remember. Once, we had been decorating the living room wall in our company house in Phillips, TX. My oldest sister had painted a castle with a dragon! Then one day when I came home from elementary school, Mom handed me a hammer and said “We’re taking out that wall.’ The little kids were already going at it. It was fun. We hammered, pried and in no time all that was left were the wooden support beams. My dad had a fit when he came home but we had an enlarged living room.”   —Melanie Hickerson
